I’m still giving it 5 stars but only because the first 80% of the book is so good. The last 20% dipped into a different kind of story that while interesting, wasn’t what I read the book for.
I was disappointed to say the least. I spent 700 plus pages on, what I thought was, a doomed arctic expedition narrated in fantastic detail. I was even excited to see where the ending would take us, although my favorite characters were dying off left and right. Yes, the gore did get to be a bit tiresome towards the end, but where the story went soon after that was the true sucker punch. I feel cheated of a proper ending.
