I adore both Chaol and Dorian. Seriously, those are the kinds of guys that girls dream of growing up and marrying one day. Very well written characters.

Celaena is my hero. I love her constant strength and fierce loyalty. I love that she can still love and smile and laugh after everything she has been through. She’s amazing and she shows it in every action she takes.

The first time I read it, I thought it was really kick ass and fun. I gave it four stars. I read the next three very quickly and gave them four stars as well. Last year I was looking at my book ratings, thinking maybe I rate too high. I have a lot of four star reviews, which is essentially one star away from excellent. And I thought to myself is this book really only one star less than Their Eyes Were Watching God or Working for the Devil? So I figured if I could recall what each book was about The first time I read it, I thought it was really kick ass and fun. I gave it four stars. And I thought to myself is this book really only one star less than Their Eyes Were Watching God or Working for the Devil? So I figured if I could recall what each book was about then a four star rating would be fair. Remembering a book after a few years means, to me, that a book was either good or bad enough to leave a lasting impression. Sadly, I couldn't recall this book straight off. I did get it back after reading the blurb, but none of the other books clicked either. Some of them I still don't remember even after reading the back. So I thought I'd revisit the series. Refresh my memory of this worthy four start oeuvre.
Not going to lie, this was pretty bad. So bad that it took me a month to finish it.
The story is okay. Terrible tyrannical king wants a lapdog assassin, so he holds a contest to find "the King's Champion" out of a disreputable lot of contestants. His son chooses the worst and most famous assassin the kingdom has ever had as his offering. She's super talented, super badass, super assassiny and he, of course, totally has the hots for her. That's the basic premise. There's some side stuff but the book is is mostly Celaena whining about her life, which boys likes her, which boy doesn't like her, which dress she'll wear, why no one pays attention to her, etc, with this contest surrounding it.
She's supposed to be this super lethal unknown assassin but she whines about not getting attention. You would think she'd be used to that, killing people on the dl being her stock in trade.
Anyway, it was a typical ya bs romantic tension novel masquerading as a kick ass fighting one. This is no Hunger Games.
Also, I listened to the audio version and it took me a very very long time to get use to the the narrator's voice. It not that she's got an unpleasant voice exactly but it has a "nails on the chalkboard" quality to it at times. I wanted to punch her Celaena.

I really enjoyed this book and I am excited to continue the story. I had to push through the first few chapters and I felt the names and city names were difficult which disrupted the easy flow of the story, but once I got used to them I couldn't put it down. The characters are so likable and I got so hooked into their relationships. I can't wait to read the next books in this series. I definitely recommend this book. ...more

I love this author. I read ACOTAR which was a slow burn at the start but eventually picked up…. This book was immediately capturing and only got more enticing as the reading went on. I am so excited for the romance aspect to bloom- It is much more subtle than her other novels and more “PG” but still exciting for an adult reader. Overall, I will absolutely read this again and I can’t wait to continue the series.

Discovering that SJM started this book when she was 16yo made a lot about his book make sense. The plot and character development are unimaginative and immature. The focus of the plot- the competition to find the kingdom’s Champion- is completely illogical. How is a thief meant to hold this position, much less a psychopathic serial killer who can be trusted alone without multiple guards?
