Ok, now I'm officially in love with this book.
Q:
“Are we too late?” Gwendolyn asked. Bridget had no notion whatsoever how the prim little noblewoman managed to load so much arrogance and confidence into her seemingly fatuous tone.
“Honestly,” Rowl said. “What are you so concerned with, Littlemouse?”
“I’ve never . . .” Bridget said. “I’ve never really been . . . outside.”
“There are many things you have never done,” Rowl responded. “To be frightened of them is of no use to you.”

I listened to this one rather than reading it, since an audiobook was available from my library. I got a lovely hardcover version of this as a "goodie" at the Goodreads summit, with notes from GR staff. It'll be a prized possession for many years, so I didn't want to put it through my unkind reading process. :-P

Not a real review but... I really liked this fantasy with steampunkish overtones. This is an ensemble piece with many good characters and the various point of views were handled well. I liked the world that was created and the way that it was slowly exposed.I did this in audio and was a bit worried about tackling such a long book in this format, but the story is very well paced so the length wasn't an issue. I really liked the reader- he did a good job with everyone male, female and feline. I am

Adventure, danger, mystery, adorable snarky cat, and so much more. Jim Butcher could write a fascinating grocery list. I'm off to book 2 now.

If this was written by anyone other than Jim Butcher I doubt I'd have gotten past 100 pages. I kept expecting it to improve but it doesn't. Sure it has its moments of interest but in general it's pretty awful.
The characters are boring and poorly portrayed. I outright hate more than half of the main characters. The chapters with the etherealists are confusing as well as frustrating. They talk in circles with no purpose. Folly at least improves as a character near the end but the early chapters ar ...more

Not my usual genre, but I love the Dresden Files so much I wanted to give it a try. Still not my genre, but the characters and story were so compelling that I kept with it and really enjoyed it. And damn it, I'm probably going to read the whole series!

Oooh! So excited! My fiancé just bought this book for himself because he likes Butcher. He didn't know this was on my reading list. As soon as I have some spare time (ie. when school is done) I can commence with the reading!!
