5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - One of my favourite reads from what is a standout series! If I could give more than a five star review I'm not sure I'd know where to stop!

J.D. Robb's In Death Series, focuses on the cases of complicated and damaged New York homicide cop Eve Dallas, who works out of Central Division. Although a standalone story focusing on a particular homicide case, Survivor In Death picks up the timeline from the previous novels in the series and you'll miss key character events and developments if 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - One of my favourite reads from what is a standout series! J.D. Robb's In Death Series, focuses on the cases of complicated and damaged New York homicide cop Eve Dallas, who works out of Central Division. Although a standalone story focusing on a particular homicide case, Survivor In Death picks up the timeline from the previous novels in the series and you'll miss key character events and developments if you skip the previous novels.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas, homicide cop in the New York central division and wife to Irish billionaire Roarke, mostly reformed criminal and electronic and financial wizard is on the case of a heinous multiple murder of an entire family, including the young children, all except the nine year old daughter Nixie, who managed to hide whilst she went downstairs for a late night fizzy drink. Nixie traumatised from seeing murder and finding her parents dead in their bed is discovered bloody and in shock in the bathroom by Eve. The murders looks like a professional hit, but also feel very personal and Eve struggles with her personal demons as Nixie's situation triggers unwelcome memories and nightmares from her own past and Nixie has latched onto Eve as her saviour and family avenger. And now the murderers have upped the stakes killing two of Eve's detectives to send her a message. It's clear the criminals are well organised and trained, but so is Eve and as usual, the criminals have underestimated her and her team.

Eve and Roarke take on their biggest challenge yet when they take the young witness Nixie into their home to protect her. Luckily Roarke's majordomo Summerset is on hand to help them navigate the unfamiliar territory of living with and caring for a young child. As usual, Eve is ably assisted by her partner and newly minted detective Peabody, her mentor, former partner and father figure, Captain Feeney of E division, his best E-man Detective McNab and top psychologist Dr Mira is on hand to help. Nadine Furst, ace reporter for Channel 7 is primed to tell the story behind the media spin and willing to dig deep with her contacts to aide the investigation and grab the scoop. Added to the team this time round is Detective Baxter and his adorably cute and shiny aide Officer Trueheart.

Eve and Roarke are a unified team in this novel and it's lovely to see them evolving as a couple, becoming even more solidified and strong. Eve stays true to her character and it was good that Robb didn't soften her edges just because she was dealing with a kid. At the same time Peabody is finding her rhythm as Eve's partner, rather than aide and is becoming a more well rounded character with each instalment. The team is working out of Eve and Roarke's home and there are some fun moments of wry humour as Roarke contemplates how much his life has changed since meeting Eve and embracing her work and team into his life.

I listened to this novel on unabridged, audible audio. The narration by Susan Ericksen is top class, she does a great Irish accent and her tone for male and female characters is well developed, with great individual and recognisable character voices. It's great to have a consistent and talented narrator through the whole series of over 50 titles to date! ...more
