I will admit to picking the book up after watching the movie - my only excuse is that I didn't know the book existed before that. And that's something I regret, so much.

The Martian is - incomparable, to say the least.

As blasphemous as some people may find the next words, the only other sci-fi writer that's had such an effect on me was Asimov.
