I started reading The Outsiders when I was in middle school but quit before finishing half the book because I didn't like it. Thirty or so years later, I decided to give it another shot, and my opinion is not much improved: although it's not a terrible book, it is subpar.

This is my first read of this book -- I somehow missed it in the teenage years when I am pretty sure everyone else in the world was assigned it for school. The story is simple -- teenagers are classified as "greasers" or "socs" and struggle with what that means, their places in the world, and how to grow up.
