When hovering over the stars to rate books here on Goodreads, the 2-star pop-up text reads, "it was okay," and that is a nearly perfect expression of how I felt about You'll Grow Out of It: I neither loved nor hated it; I didn't think it was particularly memorable nor especially forgettable; it was funny here and there but not permeated with rollicking humor; it was not a shining example of brilliant prose, but neither was it poorly written. It was okay.

Knowing who Jessi Klein is, I had anticipated You'll Grow Out of It being funnier than it was, so its failure to live up to my expectations was disappointing and contributed to my rating this as merely 2 stars (it was okay) instead of 3 stars (liked it) or even 4 stars (really liked it). One other problem I had with this book was that Klein's attempts at self-deprecating humor seemed less than genuine to me. She paints herself as a grown-up tom-boy: she claims that she doesn't like make-up or fashion or conform to standard American notions of beauty. However, I would venture to say that the vast majority of heterosexual males would find Klein to be quite attractive, and she is frequently seen in public appearances wearing fashionable clothes and make-up. Her attempts at self-deprecation, granted her status as one of the beautiful people, seem condescending. Additionally, she does make a few comments that show that she embraces typical American body image ideals; at one point, in the chapter about buying her wedding dress, she mentions that she "looked like a fat piece of shit." This is typical body-shaming language, and although she is using it in reference to herself, it shows that she views being fat as somehow bad or less than ideal, and I found that quite disappointing.

Despite these problems, the book was well written and a very quick, easy read that was good for a few laughs. I especially enjoyed the chapter where she discusses whether or not women should get an epidural when giving birth. It was far and away the funniest chapter in the book: snarky, slightly vulgar, and unabashedly honest.

This was probably more of a 2.5 for me. It just wasn't what I was expecting. Yes, it was funny and yes I could totally relate to some of the situations she found herself in. However, I could not relate to shopping at Sephora or other high-end boutiques and spending hundreds of dollars on a dress or face cream. Jessi describes herself as such a schlub but go ahead and google her..for real...she's gorgeous and thin and obviously wealthy and remind me why I'm supposed to feel sorry for her? ...more

It the story of an unremarkable, uninteresting person. All of her accounts , well they pretty much belong to someone else to. Nothing unique, no new perspective. Like reading a boring diary.
