Well. This is not the book I was thought I was signing up for. Based on . . . I'm not exactly sure what I assumed these were fantasy books with dragons. The first book starts as a pretty standard going-away-to-world-saving-school story, just set in China. (There are no dragons though) It leaned into the magical/supernatural (still no dragons) and then flipped and suddenly became (or always was and I just noticed it) a pretty close retelling of the Second Sino-Japanese War, just with some superna ...more

I loved the first half of this book. Poor, abused, rural orphan studies her ass off so she can score the highest on a test that will secure her admittance into the military academy. When she gets there, she learns a lot, faces down the privilege that the children of Warlords have coming into the school, and secures an apprenticeship with a quirky teacher in an esoteric field. I find the main character a little wishy washy, like Katniss in Hunger Games. But entertaining book. Definitely will read the other ones.
