Despite all the hype (Stephen King called it one of the finest horror novels of the late 20th century), I just didn't feel the love so many others did for The Haunting of Hill House. So what was the problem for me? First of all, it took a long time to get going. I reached page 127 of 246 pages before anything really happened. "Salah satu kisah horor terbaik abad ke-20." Demikian label buku ini yang menjadikannya salah satu buku yang wajib dibaca. Ini juga sepertinya buku bertema horor pertama yang kubaca (selain buku-buku RL Stine, ya).

Idenya tentu saja memang brilian, Hill House merupakan rumah besar berusia 80 tahun yang sedari awal didesain dan dibangun dengan tidak wajar oleh pemiliknya (view spoiler) dan telah "memakan" banyak korban. Seor "Salah satu kisah horor terbaik abad ke-20." Demikian label buku ini yang menjadikannya salah satu buku yang wajib dibaca. Ini juga sepertinya buku bertema horor pertama yang kubaca (selain buku-buku RL Stine, ya).

Idenya tentu saja memang brilian, Hill House merupakan rumah besar berusia 80 tahun yang sedari awal didesain dan dibangun dengan tidak wajar oleh pemiliknya (view spoiler) dan telah "memakan" banyak korban. Seorang doktor ilmu filsafat, Dr. John Montague, berniat menyelidikinya, mencatat fenomena supranatural di dalam Hill House, dan melibatkan 3 orang lain: dua asisten perempuan bernama Eleanor dan Theodora dan satu perwakilan dari pewaris rumah tersebut, pemuda bernama Luke.

Mereka menghabiskan seminggu lebih di Hill House, katanya untuk mencatat fenomena supranatural yang terjadi, namun 90% yang mereka lakukan sepertinya terkait bergaul: mengobrol, makan, minum, main catur, dll. Lalu keanehan-keanehan mulai terjadi, namun mereka tetap bertahan di situ tanpa kejelasan tujuan selain sekadar "mengamati". Selama itu, perasaan dan pikiran para tokoh berubah-ubah, pasti karena atmosfer negatif pada Hill House.

Namun ternyata, aku kurang menikmati/memahami buku ini. Aku tak tahu misalnya, mengapa beberapa kalimat dicetak tebal, lalu aku juga merasa asing dengan gaya ceritanya. Mungkin karena dialog atau narasi banyak merujuk kepada lagu/cerita/budaya tertentu sehingga sulit dipahami.

Misal pada hal 86 ini disebut dalam konteks bercanda "Yang omong-omong, setelahnya dia angkat kaki menggunakan mobil konvertibel antik bersama Pembunuh Pertama dan Kedua." Entah apakah maksud dari Pembunuh Pertama dan Kedua ini (kalau googling ada sih misalnya tokoh Third Murderer pada Macbeth), tapi aku tetap ga paham sih artinya.

Juga ada frasa yang diulang-ulang terus: Akhir perjalanan adalah awal pertemuan sepasang kekasih. Mungkin ini terkait sesuatu yang terjadi pada akhir buku, tapi tetap saja terasa tidak pas.

Yah, setidaknya aku sudah baca buku yang "menginspirasi banyak penulis besar, termasuk Stephen King dan Neil Gaiman", tapi sekarang sepertinya aku harus mencari buku horor lain. ...more

"Almost any house, caught unexpectedly or at an odd angle, can turn a deeply humorous look on a watching person; even a mischievous little chimney or a dormer like a dimple, can catch up a beholder with a sense of fellowship; but a house arrogant and hating, never off guard, can only be evil."

It's getting close to Halloween, so I thought I'd add a spooky story to my to-read list, and Shirley Jackson's 1959 classic The Haunting of Hill House totally fit the bill.
