I've never been a fan of horror - not because I don't like being scared, but because it never seems to work on me (I fell asleep babysitting late one night, in an unfamiliar house, while watching Stephen King's It).

But this was good. Beautiful writing. An unreliable narrator, so you're never exactly sure what really happened. And while I doubt I'll have nightmares from it, I can tell it's going to stick with me.

Jackson basically invented modern horror. This book is a keystone in that. The way she is able to describe paranormal activity with a kind of fascination and revulsion is incredible. She is a master at using language in order to create evocative moods, settings, and experiences. That being said, the thing I did end up having a problem with in this book were the characters. If I can't be Joan Didion in this life, can I least be Shirley Jackson? I think "... Hill House" is quite possibly the perfect haunted house novel. Loved it. Her prose is chilling precisely because it is so matter-of-fact, and she does the unreliable narrator thing to perfection. ...more
