What Members Thought
I liked this book. I think parts of it were better than others, and certainly the best parts of it were the actual rules, which weren't written by Shafak herself. Rumi is incredibly familiar for many Americans, and ironically less so for many Palestinians, so when we read this in book club, it was perhaps more powerful for the Palestinian members of our group than for me. This one languished on my bedstand for several months, so I'm reselling it. I wanted to read something of a Turkish female author, but not about divorce, family life, misery, stasis... My determination to get past the description didn't get me beyond the first couple chapters, I'm afraid. No hook.

I liked the idea of this book, and the novel within the novel was beautiful and inspiring and engaging. The present day story was a let down, and I feel that it actually detracted from the overall message of love and following your heart.
