I’m not sure how I feel about Nadia Hashimi’s The Pearl That Broke Its Shell. The blurbs will tell you this: It’s a story of two women in two very different Afghanistans: one on the brink of modernizations several generations ago, and the other on the brink of collapse under the pressure of the war between the Taliban and the Western forces. It is hard to put into words what this book has been for me. It is simply an incredible story of two Afghani women separated by nearly a century of war and all they did to survive. Their stories are moving and heart changing. I bought this book on a whim at a tiny bookstore while on a summer vacation. I had no idea what I was in for.
