I have a hard time with Sarah Waters's endings. They feel abrupt, rushed and unsatisfying, which is in stark contrast to the other 90-percent of her writings. While this book wasn't my favorite of hers, it was certainly entertaining and interesting.

This is one of those cases where I wish I could do half stars. I thought this was a fun read, but didn't like it quite as well as Fingersmith. This would be a solid 3.5 stars for me. I saw the miniseries of this years ago, and I have to say I like the book much, much better. I loved the richness of this book, and the depth of history about the lesbian, theatre and sex worker subcultures that existed in the late nineteenth century.
