I think, if I could, I would give this book 3.5 stars. I really enjoy reading about women's health and struggles for the right to make decisions about their own bodies, and this book certainly dealt with those issues. I felt for Dora throughout the story -- her love respect for Miss Babineau, her struggle to learn the craft and accept being a midwife, her marriage, and her taking over the midwifery role and battles with Dr. Thomas. Absolutely wonderful novel, entwining social history with a moving story. The depiction of the sex lives of women and birthing of children in Nova Scotia during the First World War is fascinating.
