Very funny! I had no idea Virginia Woolf was going to make me laugh so much with "Orlando."
On page 137, after a very long rest, Orlando wakes in a new form.
"The trumpeters, ranging themselves side by side in order, blow one terrific blast:--
'THE TRUTH!'
at which Orlando woke.
He stretched himself. He rose. He stood upright in complete nakedness before us, and while the trumpets pealed Truth! Truth! Truth! we have no choice left but confess--he was a woman."
"Orlando" is also a sexy romp. (Page 221) ...more

I'm trying to read less fantasy and science fiction this year (or at least more of other stuff to balance it out) and this was my first attempt. I knew it was a classic and that among some of my friends the Best Book Ever Written, but I wasn't at all familiar with the premise or plot. And it turns out to have several serious fantastical elements, including extremely long life (one might even say, as in the case of Gollum, "unnatural long life") and a non-surgical sex change.

I've read several books by virginia woolf and loved them all, but this one was more of a slog. I get that it was trying to be a literary joke, but oof. There were a few stand-out passages, especially towards the end, but overall I did not love this one. ...more
