I don't usually read fantasy but I loved this one. Really rich emotions and characters in a fantastical world that really was wilder than I could even imagine. I can't wait to read the next one.

Fascinating and engrossing. Well-built world, well-written plot, fully fleshed-out characters. Jemisin weaves mysteries through the text and helps the reader solve them. An intriguing read. I'll be interested to read the sequel!

I really enjoyed this book, but I wish I had followed my instinct when I first started listening to it on audio, and switched to the regular book instead. The audiobook wasn't great. I found it very confusing, kind of flat, and difficult to tell who was speaking, when they were speaking vs. thinking, and it somehow ruined a lot of the personality and cleverness of the book. Also, it's always difficult to listen to a sci fi or fantasy book when there are lots of strange names and "made up" words,
