unbelievable that richard wright and ralph ellison hated this book! it was amazing, a view of the past in a part of history that is overlooked. because it was written by a woman from her point of view, i have a feeling that's why the men didn't like it. DEFINITELY READ THIS!!!

I picked this up after seeing "Spunk" at Actors Theatre here in town. At first the written dialect of southern Floridians seemed a bit affected, but after I settled into the story, I became entranced. I really started turning the pages toward the last third of the book during Janie's romance with Tea Cake.
