Just wow. So prescient. I read this with the same horror I read Handmaid's Tale in middle school, though then that book seemed like a cautionary tale. Reading this book now, it seems like an inevitability, much like reading Handmaid would seem in these times, and perhaps more believable (other than the minimal fantastical elements).

Despite this being science fiction (debatable, in my opinion), and dystopian with climate change accents (right in my wheelhouse), I wasn’t overly impressed. It’s a good story, for the most part, and while it certainly hasn’t happened, therefore fiction, it has a rather violent ring of truth to it, unfortunately. I'll stick with my thoughts when I was about halfway through this book: Sometimes this feels like it was written by a political campaign that is trying to convince us of how awful things are/will be and only God, guns, and walls can save us...

A very bleak view of what could happen in the near future of the United States. Violent, well-written, not sarcastic. A little bit weird with the invention of a religion. It gave me actual nightmares.
A complex and precient novel.
