Nine fabulous "short fictions" from Margaret Atwood.

I especially enjoyed "I Dream of Zenia With the Bright Red Teeth," where we revisit characters from "The Robber Bride."

"Torching the Dusties" is one of the best things I've read about aging. "Neither Jo-Ann nor Noreen is Hungarian, but they too are displaying impressive flirting skills. So, before you Atwood fans begin storming the gates about the 3-star rating, let me explain. This is my first introduction to Atwood and it's quite possible that given a different book I might have rated it higher. However, this collection of tales is odd, at times awkwardly lascivious (and, believe me, prudish is one of the last three adjectives anyone would ever use to describe me), and dare I say gruesome but in a very wholesome fashion. I know I'm in the minority but I love Atwood's tales and shorter stories the best, and would be very happy if that's all she did. These tales all contain very different narratives that revolve around regrets and aging, compounded by a little sci fi, mystery and/or magic, and are extremely hard to put down. ...more
