What Members Thought

This book was chilling and compelling.
The strangeness of the story yet with so much reference to a possible future. The fact it was written almost 40 years ago does not diminish its impact in anyway. I think it is even more forceful for that.
The narrative style would not suit everyone. Yet I felt the stark structure leant itself to this story.

I just finished reading this, and I honestly can't believe that I haven't read it before now. I think this has become one of my favorite dystopian novels, especially because the main idea -- a society where women are subjugated and reproduction is forced and controlled -- doesn't seem that far from the realm of possibility. Frighteningly. In fact, I know there are current societies where elements similar to this story do actually take place.

A very disturbing book, but once you start it's hard to put down.
