I thoroughly enjoyed this book. In fact, I was excited to get home yesterday so that I could read it - and wound up finishing it off after sitting there enraptured for several hours. It's just a great, old-fashioned story - some mystery, some drama, and some story-telling that at times reminded me a bit of JK Rowling/Harry Potter. The content was not at all similar except that it did sort of unravel events from the past in the way that HP did over time (finding out about what went on during Harr ...more

2024 Review
Because I remember really enjoying this the first time around, I was shocked to realize I didn't remember the basics of how the mystery unfolds. It's fun to sink into the intrigue of a satisfying yarn like this even if gothic melodrama is not really my thing.

The first half is quite slow and meandering, but it picks up in the second half.

2017 Review
Great, fast-paced read.

While the mystery of this book is compelling, if at some times predictable, I rate this book so high because of the quality of the translation. Some of the phrases are so incredibly beautiful and worth memorizing that I recommend this book on that fact alone.

I'm a sucker for books about books, and this was no exception. The ensuing story is full of twists and turns as the reader learns through Daniel who the major players are and what might have actually happened. The book plays with untrustworthy narrators and different methods to convey different perspectiv ...more

Eeeeeek sorry Jen, and I know I'm in the minority, but the first half of the book I was thinking "eh?" and the second half I said out loud more than once "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME."

More substantial review TK for this one.

part adventure, part romance, part gothic horror, and very much a love letter to books and literature. atmospheric, melodramatic, and entertaining.

This gothic novel, set in Barcelona, was a pleasure to read. It was moody and romantic and well-developed, with a wholly satisfying ending.
