The afterword explaining which details were real and which fictional made the book for me.

Those looking for a "light" YA book should look elsewhere. This is a difficult book, both in subject matter and in its sometimes dense writing, but it is a worthwhile one.

It is told in a somewhat epistolary fashion, which I really liked. Although you do have to suspend your disbelief just a bit, that the women writing would have as much time to write all they did and that they would remember details as well as they did, it also adds a layer of dialog to the book that wouldn't be there otherwise.

At times confusing, this double narrative had a good deal of historical information to bolster the story of a friendship forged in wartime. The last quarter was sad and surprising.

This is really more like a 3.5 or 3.75 but I didn't feel right just giving it a simple three stars since I have given some pretty awful, yet entertaining, books three stars. There was a lot I liked about this book, including the fact that it surprised me more than once. It's not a book I loved and it's probably not a book I'd read again but it provided a unique perspective into WWII. I can absolutely see what so many other people loved about this book. ...more

So, so good! I love reading historical fiction but tend to shy away from WWII books because they generally just make me cry. But since there were so many good authors and readers recommending it I read it and I am so glad I did. It did make me cry, but it was completely worth it. Maddie and Julie are just such great characters, their personalities just sing from the pages.
