What Members Thought

I kept hearing that this book was funny, and that was what I needed at about this point, but much like The Wangs vs. the World, it was really just a bunch of rich people being obnoxious, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why people keep finding that so funny on the whole. The serious parts of the book were far better, I thought, and the format - a hybrid form of epistolary, I guess - was creative, which somewhat redeemed it for me. That and Antarctica.

Severe social anxieties do not mix well with Seattle suburbia and an impending trip to Antarctica. I really enjoyed uncovering the world of Bernadette Fox through the different characters' correspondence and her daughter's narration. PS: Anyone want to go to Antarctica?

I really enjoyed this book. And found the different voices of the characters particularly fun, especially as several of them turned out to be different from what I thought at first!

Comedy through absurdness. I did not like the epistolary format - a lot of information is conveyed in documents that normally would not divulge that much detail and that took away some verisimilitude. I was not particularly drawn to Bernadette either, but Bee's sections as a narrator were enjoyable. Some laugh-out-loud moments every now and then (ahem, the blackberry bushes!).
