For my money, Kingsolver is this generation's Steinbeck. She would be too modest to accept this praise, in my opinion, but that makes her no less deserving of it.

This collection of essays should be required reading for anyone under the age of 95, any American, or anyone who wonders why the world is in the state it's in and what there is we can do about it. I hate the idea of "required reading," but sometimes there is a book that reaches that plateau. Each essay is crafted with timeless simplicit

Ok, I really really liked the first story in this book that revolves around the saving of a human toddler by a mama black bear that is supposedly true. It made me weep. And, as much as I HATE to give B. Kingsolver anything less than a 4, I have to say the rest of these stories were pretty much rambling. I don't even remember what most of them were about.

My favorites were:
- A Fist in the Eye of God
- Lily's Chickens
- The One Eyed Monster and Why I don't let him in (maybe I need to cut back on my TV!)
- God's Wife's Measuring Spoons

This makes me want to re-read "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" and antsy to plant my garden.

Small Wonders is a collection of essays with Kingsolver's thoughts on various topics related to nature & the environment. As is usually the case, some of the essays in the collection stood out as stronger to me than others. Overall the collection was simply okay. ...more

Sanctimonious but thought-provoking. It made me think about how many miles my groceries had traveled to reach Ames. I loved "Going to Japan" and "Lily's Chickens."

So very full of hope -- a book focused on the ills of the world, but with one of the more uplifting approaches to those ills. A really lovely book.
