This was a terrible, cliche way of making points about slavery. I didn't think the writing was good at all which was disappointing because I don't remember the content of Secret Life of Bees but I remember loving it. I couldn't believe when I got to the end and it turned out the characters were real and it was historical fiction because it felt so contrived. It was okay but it just seemed so chesy and lame. Before reading The Invention of Wings I could have said yes, I'd heard of Sarah and Angelina Grimke and that I thought they had something to do with abolition or women's suffrage or something like that, but that's about it. Thank you, Ms Kidd, for bringing their contributions to light. Okay sure, this is fiction, but the bones of fact are there.

A good story. An important story. But it took me a long time to get through. I listened to the audiobook on my commute and, not that it was boring, it just wasn't so engaging in the beginning that I'd rather listen to the story than music. But by the last 1/3rd of the book I couldn't wait to hear what other challenges were to be faced and overcome by these brave women. Now that I'm done, I look back and smile at the thought of Sarah and "Handful" inventing their wings in their own way and growin

The biographical bits were interesting, and there were some key moments that shed light on America's relationship with slavery, but the book was 100 pages too long, and I never found myself attached to the characters or their bonds to one another.

I thought the beginning of the story was very slow and predictable, but it picked up speed when Sarah grew up and moved North. I wish there had been more detail about that time in the sister's lives.
