Shelves: 20th-century, looks-like-fluff, audiobook

This was my first Kristin Hannah book and will most likely be my last. I don't understand the hype, the following, the praise this story has gathered. They story felt forced, amateurish, dull, and predictable.

"She was in so much pain, it was indescribable."

A good writer will describe it, will paint the pain so that the reader can begin to imagine it, and even wince.

3 stars or 4 stars? I can't decide. 3.5 stars, then.

I keep comparing this to "All the Light We Cannot See" which was exceptional, and this falls just short. While the storyline and themes are really great here, the overabundance of cliches and weird gaps in time as well as the head-scratching moments that just don't make sense (takes you all day to wait in line for moldy bread but false papers just appear within minutes? Shelves: fiction, 2016

This book unexpectedly turned into a sob fest at the end. I learned so much about the French home front during World War II, and I thought I knew a lot already. Lovely and utterly heartbreaking.
