*Unpopular Opinion Alert!*

Ugh. I can’t remember the last time my expectations were so high and the reality was so low.

This should’ve been an easy home run for me! It’s right in my wheelhouse! Literary fiction about a couple over the course of their 24-year marriage, told from the point of view of the husband for the first half, the wife the second. A book about marriage and friendships and family, a book that asks you to consider if you can truly know a person. Sounds good, right?

Well. I'm not really sure what to say about this one, or how much I actually liked it. Stories about marriage, and the secrets and omissions (for good or not) that are contained within them, are generally pretty interesting to me. Flawed characters with hidden depths are also right in my wheelhouse, so I went in expecting to really like this book.

I was surprised that I didn't "love" this as much as many people do. I can certainly appreciate the excellent writing. I think I was distracted by real life and some of this book went over my head (I felt like to truly understand it I needed to be reading it as part of a literature class...all of those Shakespeare characters and myths? Over my head). I am glad that I read several reviews that mentioned how different the second half of the book is from the first, or I might not have even kept rea ...more

3.5 for me. The longish first half didn't really hook me, but the change of perspective in the second and the various denouements did. I'm not a fan of omniscient asides, so those pulled me out of the story in the first section in an unpleasant way. But the revealed backstory in part II was dark and strange and creepy, with a few surprises and twists. Innnteresting. ...more

I don't know what compelled me to finish this book because I wanted to throw it into oncoming traffic in the beginning, but I'm so glad I stuck with it because I ended up fascinated. I thought the beginning was shallow and pretentious - it just felt like trying too hard, but the second half settled into a beautifully written, interesting story. ...more
