a beautiful, poetic tale of a young Mexican girl growing up in America. Told in short vignettes, the story builds to weave a picture of the surrounding area and street, filled with a range of complex male and female characters. Throughout runs a thread of story-telling, escapism and what it like to live in a country/place you do not call home.

I have wanted to read this book for a long time. Beautifully written in a series of vignettes about a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. So many poetic, astute, and deeply observant lines.

I wasn't sure about this audiobook when I started, but the stories drew me in. I can see why it's required reading in some schools--the subject matter can be weighty and still inspiring.

I loved, loved,loved it. Read it in one sitting. So many parallels to Betty Smith's "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." So heartbreaking but life-affirming.
