A very fast read, and a delicate meditation on the subterranean forces at work on adolescent girls. The author closely examined what it's like to have all the attention but none of the power, and lots of painful learning with no benefit of wisdom or insight. I highly recommend it not for the Manson references, but for the compelling character development and evocative prose.

The writing is excellent, the story not so good. Evie is suffering adolescent angst after a rejection by her best friend. She meets Suzanne and gets sucked into her life on the ranch and all of the people she hangs out with including Russell, the supposed Charles Manson character. There is gratuitous sex with more than one man, starvation dirt and filth and yet Evie feels accepted here. And she is in love with Suzanne. Her huge need for acceptance keeps her here.
