Daniel can't remember his mother's face, so to help him get through his grief, Daniel's father takes him to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books to choose a book. Daniel's choice is The Shadow of the Wind by Julián Carax. Daniel reads this novel and falls under its spell to the point where he looks for other works by Carax. I really enjoyed this book for the most part, and understand why several people I know say it is their favorite book. It got off to a slow start for me, and I was not that vested in the unrequited love that Daniel has for older woman, Clara. What drew me into the book was the visit to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, and Daniel's fascination with Julian Carax. Justifiably a modern classic. I was peeved by the saintly women who inspire so much passion, yet seem to have so little depth, but not enough to put the book down. The story and the writing are incredible.
