Update: After rereading it for the book club that I'm leading, I've upped my rating. Such an enjoyable read and a memorable, quirky character. I hope Gail Honeyman writes more. My original review is below.

Everyone raved about it and recommended it to me, so I figured I had to read it. I listened and struggled to get into it, but Eleanor Oliphant eventually grew on me. I enjoyed hearing Eleanor Oliphant's quirkiness and thoughts on various things such as shopping, manicures, and so much more. Tha

I really hated Eleanor. Her judgments and behaviors were just way to awkward for me to handle, and her crush on the musician went way too far. [To be fair, this book was described to me as "a lighthearted romance about a socially awkward woman" when in reality it is definitely not lighthearted at all (its pretty heavy trauma actually) and potentially not even a romance depending on how you interpret the ending so my expectations were all wrong]. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve read a book that moved as much as this one. Glorious and heartbreaking at the same time.

I think this may be my favorite book that I read this year: It's funny, tender, and gives you a different perspective on the awkward people on the periphery of your life that most people tend to ignore. Everyone I've recommended this book to so far has loved it as much as I have. It's not a high concept book, and not much happens in it, and yet everything happens and changes for Eleanor. You'll fall in love with this one if you like stories about complex characters in the vein of Olive Kitteridg ...more

Stick with this one....it’s a little slow starting. I have never read about a character quite like Eleanor Oliphant before. Socially awkward, rigid, stiff....she slowly opens herself to much deserved friendship and love. I was rooting for Eleanor! A mystery side story slowly reveals itself throughout the book. I’m excited to see this book is being made into a movie, produced by Reese Witherspoon. Bravo!
