Update: After rereading it for the book club that I'm leading, I've upped my rating. Such an enjoyable read and a memorable, quirky character. I hope Gail Honeyman writes more. My original review is below.
Everyone raved about it and recommended it to me, so I figured I had to read it. I listened and struggled to get into it, but Eleanor Oliphant eventually grew on me. I really hated Eleanor. Her judgments and behaviors were just way to awkward for me to handle, and her crush on the musician went way too far. I think this may be my favorite book that I read this year: It's funny, tender, and gives you a different perspective on the awkward people on the periphery of your life that most people tend to ignore. Stick with this one....it’s a little slow starting. I have never read about a character quite like Eleanor Oliphant before. Socially awkward, rigid, stiff....she slowly opens herself to much deserved friendship and love. I was rooting for Eleanor! A mystery side story slowly reveals itself throughout the book. I’m excited to see this book is being made into a movie, produced by Reese Witherspoon. Bravo!
