Ah, a Dateline-esque murder mystery investigated by a Mulder & Scully-like tandem in Ireland. If you like reading things topped with pretty little bows, as opposed to sad bastard reality, this is not one for you. But, the debut novel from Tana French is about as much in my wheelhouse as a book can get, so I'm going to give it the five-star treatment and the highest of recommendations. I couldn't get enough of this one.

Oh - I so wanted to love this book! I had heard alot of good things about the series, and the author. I did find the book well written, and engrossing. My problem is I have never hated a narrator in a book more in my life, and the fact the we (the readers) never find out what happened in the first murder mystery. I really enjoyed this one, especially because it didn't have quite the trajectory that I expect when I pick up a novel, especially when I know the novel's part of a series.
I loved all the descriptive language, and the mysteries themselves kept me turning the pages.
It can be difficult to write a mystery with an unreliable narrator, and this book not only tells you from the start that the narrator doesn't always tell the truth, it still manages to create a satisfying story. I don't read mysteries ...more
