Once I got used to reading the dialogue without quotation marks, I couldn't put it down. We read this for one of my book clubs. It's not a book I would have picked up on my own, but I enjoyed it for the unfolding friendship and understanding between Captain and Johanna. It reminded me of the old John Wayne movies I used to watch with my dad, like The Searchers and True Grit.

Really enjoyed this historical fiction- unique story. If you enjoyed "True Grit" you will enjoy this book as well. I think the Captain is one of my favorite characters, and the "dime scene" one of the best Western scenes I've read. Reading about the author, Paulette Jiles, I am glad to hear that Captain Kidd is based a a real person, who was in fact a "reader" of news in Texas in the 1800's. I will read more of Paulette's work. Would love to see this book as a film!
