From the description of this book, I didn't think I'd like it. I needed to read it for a book discussion and I am so glad that I did! Based on a Russian fairy tale, The Snow Child is a magical story, even if you don't know the fairy tale. Beautifully written, I could feel the cold of winter and felt I was there with them.

I loved this book. I was totally captivated by this retelling of "The Snow Child", an old Russian folktale. I sometimes wavered between believing the girl was real, to being a girl made of snow come to life. An older couple, Jack and Mabel, have decided to begin life again on the Alaskan frontier in the early 1920's, trying to cope with the loss of their still born infant son. I wasn't sure that I'd like this book, but ended up really enjoying it. It was part whimsical fairy tale that required the reader to suspend their disbelief, part adventure story about an older couple trying to make it as farmers in 1920's Alaska and the harsh winters they endured. Parts of the story were very heavy, but Faina brought a lightness to Mabel and Jack's lives each time it snowed. Many of the plot points I should have seen coming, but for some reason I didn't.
