Para mí ha sido todo un descubrimiento la narración de Alex Michaelides, y para bien. Si ya me gustó Las Doncellas, esta novela que fue su debut me ha gustado incluso más.
El personaje del psicoterapeuta Theo Faber no me era desconocido, pues ya aparecía brevemente en las páginas de Las Doncellas. Pero esta vuelta de tuerca me ha dejado completamente descolocada. El autor sabe como llevarme de la mano, soltarme, recogerme, darme vueltas y que aun así siga mirando en la dirección q (Ebook 13, 2024)

El personaje del psicoterapeuta Theo Faber no me era desconocido, pues ya aparecía brevemente en las páginas de Las Doncellas. Pero esta vuelta de tuerca me ha dejado completamente descolocada. El autor sabe como llevarme de la mano, soltarme, recogerme, darme vueltas y que aun así siga mirando en la dirección que me indica y engañarme. Me ha encantado.
La historia trata sobre como Theo entra a trabajar en el psiquiátrico de alta seguridad The Grove y porqué. Lo hace por Alicia Berenson, la pintora de éxito que mató a su marido de cinco disparos en la cara sin motivo aparente y dejó de hablar. No ha dicho ni una palabra desde entonces, y de ello han pasado años, ni siquiera en su juicio para defenderse. Pero Theo está convencido de que él puede ayudarla y con su terapia conseguirá que se explique y vuelva a hablar.
No quiero desvelar nada más de la trama, porque la gracia está en los detalles. Michaelides teje una tela de araña en la que he caído irremediablemente, no me lo vi venir.
Su narración es exquisita, y también ciertas explicaciones y disertaciones psicológicas que me han encantado. La verdad tengo que decirlo, tengo debilidad por los libros que además de entretenerme y sorprenderme me enseñan algo. Imagino que deformación profesional. Pero a lo que nos atañe, la narración es magistral, no creo que tenga ni una página de mas ni de menos, es un libro que se lee relativamente rápido, tanto por su extensión como por el nivel de atracción que genera en el lector conforme avanzas. Los personajes creo que están muy bien diseñados y retratados, pudiendo verse diversos grados de evolución si son o no requeridos para la narración.
Es un thriller psicológico que juega con el lector, pero debo admitir que tengo que quitarme el sombrero con Michaelides. Lo ha hecho fenomenal. Llegados al final no podía parar de leer, y no me lo podía creer, no solo ha jugado psicológicamente conmigo, sino también con la narración y no creo que se haya saltado ninguna regla escribiendo como lo ha hecho, pero me ha maravillado, es algo relacionado con los tiempos, pero no puedo decir más, quien lo haya leído lo entenderá.
Los personajes me han cautivado, tanto Alicia como Theo. A Alicia tardé en comprenderla y a Theo me tenía ganada desde el principio.

En parte, la mayor parte de la gente que no ha disfrutado este libro del todo es porque estaban constantemente esperando que pasara algo que se repite hasta la saciedad en las valoraciones.

A book that you enjoy from beginning to end maintains the intrigue and the unexpected twists are impacted by characters that make you think and maintain suspense until the end of the story.

Un libro que disfrute de principio a fin mantiene la intriga y los giros inesperados con personajes impactantes que te ponen a pensar y mantienen el suspenso hasta el final de la obra.

Hoping these 1-2 stars ratings won't become a thing...

This book didn't do it for me. All the five-stars ratings and positive reviews seemed too good to be true. The Silent Patient is a cheap psychological thriller, full of sub-plots the author introduces throughout the entire book only to discard at the end because the resolution has no ties to either of them. The main character, Theo, acts more like a private investigator than a psychotherapist, and is also loaded with a lot of trauma and unres Hoping these 1-2 stars ratings won't become a thing...

This book didn't do it for me. All the five-stars ratings and positive reviews seemed too good to be true. The Silent Patient is a cheap psychological thriller, full of sub-plots the author introduces throughout the entire book only to discard at the end because the resolution has no ties to either of them. The main character, Theo, acts more like a private investigator than a psychotherapist, and is also loaded with a lot of trauma and unresolved issues that make him pretty unstable and an unreliable narrator. The mental institution that hired him gave him full access to treat their high-profile patient, Alicia, for which Theo doesn't treat anyone else at the hospital. (There were only TWO patients at the hospital anyways...) He then goes asking every available relative of his patient about her because *sighs* she hasn't spoken a word in years, since she murdered her husband. And of course our guy Theo is the only one capable of solving this mystery. So we meet the brother in law, the cousin and lovely aunty, the best friend--and everyone is keeping secrets from Theo, making themselves look very suspicious. The author manipulates us, feeding crumbs of sub-plots that, as we find out at the end, lead to nowhere: the cousin had contacted Alice at night, a short time before the murder, to ask her for money and to say he was in some kind of trouble; the brother-in-law was obsessed with her; her best friend warns her one day about someone who might want to hurt her, sparking a sense of paranoia in Alicia and getting the reader to ask themselves if she may have been framed for the murder of her husband.

What is going on!!

For a moment I thought Amy was truly crazy. Theo was too emotionally-invested in this patient-doctor relationship and it was affecting him on a personal level. Both characters had their own baggage of unresolved trauma, having grown up in abusive households, with parents that did not love them and caused them to be very dependant on other people--their partners--as adults. How I would have loved if this had ended with Theo killing his wife just like Alicia did with her husband! An Amy Dunne in Gone Girl kind of moment; Alicia getting into Theo's mind. Chaos. One can only dream, huh. And for a moment I did think that was going to happen. But that twist? It bored me.

At the end none of the side characters had anything to do with the murder. We don't learn anything new from them as they were used as a distraction tool, to have the reader confused and made them suspicious of everyone on the book. The big revelation--why Alicia has kept her mouth shut all this time--is just as disappointing. The writing certainly does the job. As a thriller this book reads quite easily, but a thriller with so many plot-holes only poses as one. Too many unanswered questions remained floating around, and by the last quarter of the book I found myself indifferent to whatever could happen to its characters.

Lo quise leer porque hablan maravillas de el, que uno de los mejores Thriller's, bla, bla, bla... es súper aburrido, y el Plot Twist súper meeh, Alicia siempre puso en un pedestal a Gabriel, y el vato era nefasto, imagino que el autor quería que sintieramos amor por él, para después rompernos la burbuja, pero neta no sentí nada por el vato, al chile desde el principio me dió hueva...

Los 2 primeros tercios el suspenso te mantiene en la lectura de forma casi adictiva, pero el tercio final decae y quizás las expectativas son tan altas por el inicio que el desenlace no satisface del todo.
