I was really disappointed by this book in general. I could go into a rant of the many issues that did not work for me, but I am not completely in the mood and also, I think many of these issues relate to the fact that is book is YA and now I can say, this genre is not my jam. I can know fully acknowledge it, and it's ok -simply I am not the audience for these books. I was really disappointed by this book in general. However, besides that I would like to say a few things that I believe are problematic on the book which at the end is fiction and a piece of literature. This book promised much but it delivered little -the plot is very interesting and there are exciting twists and turns that catch the readers' attention. The flashbacks to the 1930s and the story of the first disappearance and murder is quite well done and I loved the glimpses to that decade, which I love. But apart from that, nothing happens! I felt my time was wasted in characters with whom I couldn't sympathize and that though "gifted students", seem pretty normal to me. I recognize there was some good rep on mental health (the main character, Stevie, has panic attacks and suffers anxiety) and the LGBT community but, I didn't go to this book looking for this. I was looking for an interesting, rounded, solved mystery and I got a book about unbelievable characters with no ending.

Este libro fue una gran decepción. Sin embargo, no haré una crítica muy larga ni muy dura, en parte porque no quiero invertir mucho tiempo y en parte porque por fin puedo saber con certeza que el género de "young adult" no es para mí. Y vaya, con 35 años a cuestas podría ser más que evidente, pero a fin de cuentas, este libro no deja de ser una ficción literaria y con ello hay ciertas espectativas. Además existen clásicos infantiles entonces que funcionan pero bueno. No culpo a nadie, solo debo reconocer que este tipo de estilo no funciona. Algunas precisiones que creo sí vale la pena hacer es que el libro promete mucho pero realmente se queda corto: la trama es interesante, partiendo de una desaparición y un asesinato ocurridos en 1930 con uno de los hombres más ricos de la época. Los capítulos se intercalan para presentar esa historia junto con la de Stevie Bell, una chica superdotada e interesada en todo el tema de crímenes reales. La historia de los Ellingham, es muy interesante y me gustó ver un retrato de esa época de oro en Estados Unidos. Pero aparte de eso, pareciera que nada sucede. Los personajes me parecieron hasta antipáticos -adolescentes en teoría con talentos y conocimientos especiales pero que realmente eran los típicos jóvenes de la edad, y cuyas descripciones añadían poco a la trama general. Reconozco que hay una buena representación de problemas de salud mental y la onda LGBT en adolescentes pero... yo no empecé este libro buscando este tipo de discusión probablemente porque a mi edad, son cosas que conozco y estoy familiarizada. Lo que buscaba era un misterio entretenido, que me atrapara y que fuera resuelto... cosa que no sucede en este libro.

More like Truly Underwhelming or Truly Disappointing. There is no sense of resolution in this book. You get to read ver 400 pages just for the book to end abruptly, with nothing but the suspicion of who might have committed the crime. None of the story arcs get anywhere close to a conclusion, which is frustrating and annoying. At least give me something to work with, instead of a giant nada. The ending was nothing but a cop out, an excuse to come up with another book and you having to get it in ...more
