It always seems odd to say that one has enjoyed a reading that deals with tragedy and loss, but this book is exactly that: a heart-breaking, difficult narration that describes the catastrophe that took the life of 12 people on an Everest expedition in 1996. The author was part of that expedition, as a reporter for a U.S. magazine, who also held mountaineering as a passion. It always seems odd to say that one has enjoyed a reading that deals with tragedy and loss, but this book is exactly that: a heart-breaking, difficult narration that describes the catastrophe that took the life of 12 people on an Everest expedition in 1996. The author was part of that expedition, as a reporter for a U.S. magazine, who also held mountaineering as a passion. Mr. Krakauer describes his interest on this activity and how he became involved on the expedition to climb Everest, led by Robert Hall, a New Zealander guide who had reached the summit four times, and was a quite capable person.

I must say I am a person that openly avoids any risky situations –I will never ever go bungee jumping; I hate rollercoasters and such rides, and in general, I dislike outdoor activities –when I go to the beach, I never go past the point where my feet don’t touch the sea floor. I might be a little of a coward but I value my life and, most of all, I find no thrill on such activities, though I understand this is my personality. Naturally, climbing a mountain has never been on my things-to-do list. Falling off a cliff, or breaking a leg or an arm due to an accident are possibilities that scare me, and I find it difficult to understand how people enjoy such things when there is a real chance of getting hurt. Because accidents happen and though I could easily have an accident on my way to work, well, the percentage is lower than on more demanding contexts such as climbing the highest mountain on earth.

However, Into Thin Air gave me an insight on why people conduct these activities –it is a passion, a desire that I can only now assume cannot be compared to anything else. Based on the account of Mr. Krakauer, I could perfectly feel and see what guides, explores and travelers seek up there, in the highest place in the world –the effort, the endurance, the bravery to go up there, risking health and life, to be able to spend a few minutes up on Everest, more than 8,000 meters above the ground. The silence, the sky, and the triumph of getting up there must be a unique experience –how would the stars look up there? I can only imagine that you can feel you can almost touch them on a clear night sky.

But the author does not paint this experience as a dreamy one –mountaineering is very difficult, and one can die of many things before even getting up in the summit. In some parts of the narration I felt cold to the bone, or sick as many of the members, numb and dizzy from the altitude. In this case, the expedition he was part of got caught in a blizzard, where nature decided the fate of all members. Many died from exhaustion that caused a slower pace and thus got caught in the storm; for others, their bodies collapsed from lack of oxygen.

This is a hard account, the story of a death and loss. The author also provides historical facts on the discovery and first expeditions to the Mt. Everest itself, starting in the 20th century which complement more the story. I understand that when this was published, there were many questions –for example, Mr. Krakauer survived while many members of his team passed away, and he criticized some of the decisions other members took that might have led to the deaths of other people when at the same time he acknowledges that at more than 8,000 meters, your judgment goes numb and your brain cells are dying. However, upon reading it, I found it is not possible to blame anyone –climbing Everest is an activity that poses many dangers, and death is a very real risk. Those who go up there know it and embrace it –it is a bet that one might win or lose. And though I believe that people that do it might be a little crazy, I know think they are also strong and determined.

Puede parecer extraño decir que uno ha disfrutado una lectura que trata sobre la tragedia y la pérdida, pero este libro es exactamente eso: una narración difícil y desgarradora que describe la catástrofe que cobró la vida de 12 personas en una expedición al Everest en 1996. El autor formó parte de esa expedición, como reportero de una revista estadounidense, que también era aficionado al alpinismo. Krakauer describe su interés en esta actividad y cómo se involucró en la expedición para escalar el Everest, dirigida por Robert Hall, un guía neozelandés que había llegado a la cima cuatro veces y era una persona muy capaz.

Debo decir que soy una persona que evita abiertamente cualquier situación de riesgo: nunca voy a saltar en Bunge; odio las montañas rusas y esas atracciones, y en general, no me gustan las actividades al aire libre. Cuando voy a la playa, nunca paso del punto donde mis pies no toquen el fondo marino. Puede que sea un poco cobarde, pero valoro mi vida y, sobre todo, no me emocionan esas actividades, aunque entiendo que esto es exclusivamente debido a mi personalidad. Naturalmente, escalar una montaña nunca ha estado en mi lista de cosas por hacer. Caer de un acantilado, o romperme una pierna o un brazo debido a un accidente son las posibilidades que me asustan, y me resultaba difícil entender cómo las personas disfrutan de esas cosas cuando existe la posibilidad real de lastimarse. Los accidentes suceden y aunque fácilmente podría tener un accidente en mi camino al trabajo, creo que el porcentaje es más bajo que en contextos más exigentes como escalar la montaña más alta del mundo.

Sin embargo, Into Thin Air me dio una idea de por qué las personas realizan estas actividades: es una pasión, un deseo que solo ahora puedo asumir no se puede comparar con nada más. Basándome en el relato del Sr. Krakauer, podía sentir y ver perfectamente qué es lo que guías, exploradores y viajeros buscan allí, en el lugar más alto del mundo: el esfuerzo, la resistencia, la valentía de ir allí, arriesgar la vida para poder pasar unos minutos en el Everest, a más de 8,000 metros sobre el suelo. El silencio, el cielo y el triunfo de llegar deben ser una experiencia única: ¿cómo se verán las estrellas allí? Solo puedo imaginar que uno siente que casi puede tocarlas en un gran cielo nocturno despejado.

Pero el autor no pinta esta experiencia de forma “rosa”: el montañismo es muy difícil, y uno puede morir de muchas cosas incluso antes de llegar a la cima. En algunas partes de la narración sentí congelarme hasta los huesos, o enferma como muchos de los miembros, entumecida y mareada por la altitud. En este caso, la expedición de la que formó parte Krakauer quedó atrapada en una tormenta de nieve, donde la naturaleza decidió la suerte de todos los miembros. Muchos murieron de agotamiento que causó un ritmo más lento y, por lo tanto, quedaron atrapados en la tormenta; para otros, sus cuerpos colapsaron por falta de oxígeno.

Este es un relato duro, la historia de una da mientras se tragedia. A lo largo de la narración el autor proporciona datos históricos sobre el descubrimiento y las primeras expediciones al Monte lo cual lo hace interesante. Entiendo que cuando se publicó esto, hubo muchas preguntas; por ejemplo, Krakauer sobrevivió mientras muchos miembros de su equipo fallecieron, y criticó algunas de las decisiones que otros miembros tomaron que podrían haber ocasionado la muerte de otras personas cuando al mismo tiempo reconoce que a más de 8,000 metros, el juicio se adormece y las células cerebrales se están muriendo. Sin embargo, al leerlo, descubrí que no es posible culpar a nadie: escalar el Everest es una actividad que plantea muchos peligros, y la muerte es un riesgo muy real. Quienes suben allí lo saben y lo aceptan, y es una apuesta que uno puede ganar o perder. Hacía mucho quería leer este libro y no me decepcionó. Me gusta la forma de narrar de Jon Krakauer, desde una perspectiva muy honesta y no desligada del todo de subjetividad. Creo que es un acierto que siempre reconozca lo que es su opinión y ante lo que sucedió en el Everest, pueda afrontar que él también hizo mal las cosas. No se retrata en lo absoluto como un héroe (porque no lo es), sino como una persona queriendo sobrevivir y tratando de hacer lo mejor posible. Le da protagonismo a quien sí ...more

I found this book to be very hard to put down. Controversies aside (yes there's a certain amount of finger pointing), what I found the most interesting were the descriptions of what it actually feels to be up there, and how these feelings match up with the author's life-long expectations. Also, it was pretty interesting to read how one's physical and mental abilities get progressively impaired as one goes higher and higher, no matter how fit or how experienced in mountaneering one is. Tu, que siempre habias tenido el deseo de subir, regresas con tu jefe a proponerle algo mejor: Dame los recursos y haré una crónica sobre mi propio ascenso al monte Everest. Y por loco que parezca, te dan luz verde.
🏔️ Lo que no cruzó por la cabeza de Krakauer es que lo que sería una crónica de un ascenso, se 🧡16/52🧡 🌟🌟🌟🌟

🏔️ Lo que no cruzó por la cabeza de Krakauer es que lo que sería una crónica de un ascenso, se convertiría en un testimonio de uno de los accidentes más desgarradores en el Everest, en dónde, en ese 10 de mayo de 1996, 8 personas morirían, incluyendo dos de los guías mas experimentados en la industria de tours al Monte Everest, y que Krakauer eludiría la muerte por muy, muy poco.
🏔️ Into Thin Air es el relato de cómo se desenvolvieron los sucesos y cómo cada decisión fue escalando aunado a una terrible tormenta que sorprendería a estos alpinistas aficionados. El artículo en la revista Outside fue publicado y desató mucha controversia, fue seguido de respuestas de otros sobrevivientes, reproches de familiares y juicios de la sociedad. Into Thin Air es una crónica a detalle de lo sucedido, publicada un año después.
🏔️El resultado fue una cruda narración de lo que viven aquellos que se aventuran a subir al Everest, aventura que muchos romantizan y que es realmente llevar el cuerpo mas allá del límite. No por nada la cima esta minada de cadáveres que sirven como recordatorio de que cada año, de 5 a 10 alpinistas mueren en el intento.
🏔️Fue desgarrador de leer. La impotencia de Krakauer de no poder ayudar a sus compañeros se siente, así como la culpa con la que aun carga y su lucha por tener paz al respecto. Es sumamente triste lo que aconteció y que en retrospectiva, se pudo haber prevenido.
🏔️Como dato curioso, hay una película inspirada del libro. Se llama Everest (2015) y no la he visto pero la veré pronto. ...more
