The Sun is Also a Star was a very pleasant surprise, and even though my expectations were not extremely high, I was prepared for just an ok read as my YA contemporaries are for me. However, since the first chapter, I was hooked by the story and I liked that it is told from different points of view –including a narrator that shares facts and stories from other characters that appear throughout the book.

The Sun is Also a Star was a very pleasant surprise, and even though my expectations were not extremely high, I was prepared for just an ok read as my YA contemporaries are for me. However, since the first chapter, I was hooked by the story and I liked that it is told from different points of view –including a narrator that shares facts and stories from other characters that appear throughout the book.

The book narrates one day in the lives of Natasha and Daniel, which cross paths in New York City one autumn morning and end up falling for each other against all odds. Natasha is a Jamaican girl, facing deportation that day as she has been living as an immigrant in the US. Daniel is a Korean-American who is about to make an interview that may lead him to a career his parents want him to follow but he has no heart on it. Natasha is objective, loves science and believes in practical things, not in chances or magic; Daniel is a dreamer, a want to be poet, and is trying to find his dream.

With no hope in their future, they meet that day and get to know each other, discovering worlds they never expected. Just as Natasha and Daniel, as readers we must suspend disbelief on this story –it’s a romance and it might be cheesy, but I chose to believe on it and it turned out to be quite enjoyable. Does love at first sight exit? Can we really overcome prejudice and be happy with our decision forever? Honestly, I would say no, but at least this novel made me want to believe it was possible –for a while.

In addition, I liked how though the book has a light tone to it, it does address a very important issue –immigration. I couldn´t help but to truly understand Natasha’s hopelessness, anger, by having to leave her country –she was born elsewhere but was raised as an American and was forced to return to the unknown. I think the author made a very fine critique against U.S. immigration policies by humanizing those anonymous voices.

I laughed, felt with Natasha and Daniel’s story, dreamt with them, and could empathize with their situation, fears and hopes.

However, I must say the ending was a bit disappoiting, but specifically the last chapter, which I felt was unnecessary. As I mentioned before, in a story like this, if you are to enjoy it, you need to accept some aspects would be too easy, too pink, and light –you need to be open.
