Lorenzo Brown is employed by the SPCA to protect animals from mistreatment. He works in Washington DC at a time when drugs were freely available on the street. Not surprisingly, there is a fair amount of violence in the book. The story is engaging and fun to read.

Excellent crime fiction. The hoppers (called runners in this D.C.-based story) brought to mind the kids of The Wire; not surprising since Pelecanos was a producer and writer on that classic, now concluded, series. Read it in less than a day.
