James Cone is one of my favorite contemporary theologians, and this is arguably one of his best books. The parallels between the cross of Jesus and the lynching trees of the post-Civil War South are described from multiple points of reference: literature, music, philosophy, feminist theology, the Civil Rights movement, and the Black experience. Although written by a theologian, this book is written in a very accessible and readable style. The subject matter is, however, challenging and disturbing. It will take me a while to unpack it emotionally and intellectually. A must read for white American Christians.
