4.5 stars. Isis Blake is starting over in a new town and a new school in Ohio. No one knows that she used to be 85 lbs heavier and she's determined to make the most of her new image without the past dragging her down. Not only did she have a weight issue, but she was horribly bullied and the one guy she fell in love with completely broke her heart in the worst way possible, leaving Isis in a state of denial when it comes to the possibility of opening herself up to love again.

Isis is such a quirk 4.5 stars. Isis Blake is starting over in a new town and a new school in Ohio. Not only did she have a weight issue, but she was horribly bullied and the one guy she fell in love with completely broke her heart in the worst way possible, leaving Isis in a state of denial when it comes to the possibility of opening herself up to love again.

Isis is such a quirky and interesting character, I loved her. On the one hand, she's got blazing self-confidence when it comes to navigating the social arena in a new high school. She doesn't have a problem speaking her mind or putting people in their place even if they are in the top tier of the social elite. She's intelligent, rambles a lot (including out loud) and constantly puts on a cheerful demeanor. Underneath, she believes she's ugly and unworthy of love or affection. Yet she will fiercely protect anyone she cares about who crosses her path.

Jack Hunter is the guy made of girls' dreams at her school. He's completely cold, impassive and indifferent. He has no problems with direct honesty either and is as perceptive and intelligent as Isis is. Jack may be at the top of the social ladder, but he's far from sociable. He often appears worn out by everyday niceties and doesn't try to be polite. Jack and Isis butt heads initially because Jack hurts the feelings of Isis's one and only friend.

From there, Jack and Isis engage in a war of antagonizing each other. They aren't friends and there's nothing close to romantic between them. At the same time, it's fun to see them engage in each other's presence, to see them spark and to meet their match in terms of wits. They also sense a certain vulnerability about the other person. As they dig into each other's past, which is unwelcome territory, their protective armor gets thicker. Jack's thoughts are revealed only intermittently but they are enough to show that he's got a lot of depth and is constantly observing. He keeps his feelings tucked in close to himself and masters the art of the emotionless mask, unless he's performing an act.

There's a lot to discover about the characters in this story, but the way this is written, the secrets coming out unravel slowly at a good pace, where pieces of the puzzle begin to fill in the missing blanks. I wanted to know more about everyone and what they were hiding from each other. I also wanted to see Isis feel the same self-confidence and love on the inside like she gives on the outside. I enjoyed the complexity and substance of both Jack and Isis and with that ending, I definitely need to continue and see what happens next. ...more

So was not sure what to write because it was in the middle of the night and let me tell you there was nothing more that I wanted to do to sleep. But after the damn cliff hanger, I had to go onto the second book. Let me just say between the two books 3 am bed time was not cutting it.

J. Sterling, a trusted author that I loved to read, she was the one who recommended this author, this book. So when she said to her fans this is someone I like. Heck yeah going to read as well. Anyways, Sara you are ...more

Isis has moved to start over from a painful situation and now starting over as the new girl. A chance run in wit East Summit High's most wanted guy brings on a war that will make you laugh and introduce you to a mystery that will leave you wanting more. The strength and humor of Isis is what carries this story because a strong female make a book so m much more enjoyable. This does have a cliffhanger but it is a great story. ...more
