I've read several books about life in North Korea and they're all horrifying and fascinating at the same time. Park's is no exception. Told in a way that is straightforward and intimate, her story is truly remarkable. As depressing as it is, what really stands out is her determination to live in spite of the horrors she and her family experienced in North Korea and beyond. And so my heart has been ripped apart. The unimaginable acts taken upon Yeonmi Park as a child and young teen are atrocious. Her brave journey and willingness to share all aspects of her story to raise awareness and empower others is remarkable.
This book was so sad so heartbreaking. But I am glad to have read it and gotten to know more about North Korea. And see what Ms. Park’s story was like growing up there.
4.5 stars. A tough, but important, read.
