One of those "Ah Ha!" books. A true epiphany. I am a sixty five year old Franny, in the midst of an emotional/spiritual meltdown for quite some time now. Wish I had actually READ Franny and Zooey in high school when I used to carry it around campus, cover out, so folks could get a glimpse of how hip I was. (or not) The miserable morons. The brilliance of J.D.Salinger is that he has such control of language that in these two stories he has me nodding my head along with Franny and her emotional outbursts as she mentally and emotionally breaks in response to the pressures and frustrations of the people and society around her and realizing her place in it. Frances Glass aka Franny is a chain-smoking undergraduate theater major with an advanced case of melancholy and skepticism which she is determined to conceal from her snotty Ivy League boyfriend as they share an awkward meal at a posh restaurant. Zachary Glass aka Zooey is a chain-smoking television actor, and the youngest of Franny's many older brothers. With the Zooey story, a sequel to the Franny story, we get the family background for poor Franny, being an eccentric, theatrical family with a ...more

Since Catcher in the Rye is my absolute favorite book, I've meant to read this one for some time. A much more simple setting than Catcher, but the characters had the same witty, make-you-think lines. I doubt I'll read this over and over as I have with Catcher, but I'm glad I read it once. ...more

“…what is my duty in life? What am I using as a substitute for doing whatever the hell my duty is in life, or just my daily duty?” (paraphrased a bit)

This was poignant to me. A reminder that there is more to life than escapism through whatever method one chooses.

I didn't "get it." I was bored, but finished it for a reading challenge. My problem was really waiting for something to happen, but it was all just dialog and not so uplifting dialog. ...more
