As with Final Girls, The Last Time I Lied follows Emma, a survivor of a traumatic incident who’s never really gotten over it, who gets drawn into a threatening situation that may allow her to finally discover what really happened all those years ago. Emma is an interesting and sympathetic main character, and the book is populated with other characters who are just shady enough to make you wonder about their true motives. Bookstagram made me do it. Well, sort of made me do it. I really want to read Lock Every Door. But since I have to wait until July, I thought I would read another of his books first. I enjoyed this one. The writing was good and I was impressed that a male author can get into the mind of a women lead character so well. The plot was great. I really enjoyed Riley Sager’s Final Girls and had high hopes for his second book. I did have some reservations considering how adult thrillers have been turning out for me but The Last Time I Lied lived up to my expectations. It’s apparent that Sager really loves ‘80s horror movies - Final Girls has a more obvious reference but it’s here too with it’s summer camp setting.
