I first read this book in eight grade right after reading the Diary of Anne Frank. Both are true stories. I hated Anne Frank, and absolutely loved Alicia. It's one of those books that really make you feel grateful down to the tips of your toes for the life that you live, and that you haven't had to go through the atrocities that happened during World War 2.
