This was my first exposure to Shirley Jackson, and I was hooked from the beginning.
Reading this, I understand what The Little Stranger was trying - and failed, either despite, or perhaps because of, being twice the length - to be. Even some of the "haunting" events seem to be pretty much copies of Hill House, but without Jackson's concise prose. ...more

Dr. Montague wants to study a haunting house. After finding Hill House he rents the place for three months and invites a bunch of people with experience with paranormal happenings to come assist him in his studies. Although he sends out numerous invitations only two people accept and come to Hill House. They are joined by the owner's nephew, who will one day inherit the house. I had been wanting to read this for years and I'm not sure why it took me so long to get to it. Shirley Jackson never disappoints and this was one that I couldn't put down. The dialogue here is affected at times and the actions of the characters are almost childlike, both of which add to the uncertainty of what is going on at any given moment. My only real quibble is that I wish the denouement had been a little more drawn out.

I was surprised to realize how close the movie got (1st movie, the 1963 one), though they got some things wrong. I don't understand why they had to put in the love story. :-(
