I unequivocally loved this book. It was a perfect refresher on all of the myths that I read long ago, without what I recall as a struggle to relate. (A book that makes me want to go back and re-read The Odyssey is effective, indeed.) Circe was a complex character whose interior life kept me engaged the whole time. I went into this skeptically, because I loved Song of Achilles and I didn't think lightning could strike twice so I doubted Miller could pull it off again. But, for me at least, she pulled it off again. I am now dedicated to reading everything Miller writes, in perpetuity.

With mythology, I hesitated reading this because I assumed it would be somewhat academic. Instead, I found it very approachable storytelling, centering on one of the earliest witches in literature. Going in, I did not know Circe's story or that she was a witch, so that was a nice surprise. It is a fun combination weaving together myths both familiar and new to me. Writing is beautiful, and you really feel the emotion and struggles of some of the characters, making them relatable.
