All of Amy Tan's books have very similar themes, and even similar plots, but she still manages to put a different spin on each of her novels. This one seems to have more of a supernatural tinge, drawing the reader in from the very beginning. This book didn't have the same historical sweep as The Kitchen Gods Wife, but stood its own all the same, drawing more from Chinese archeological aspects such as oracle bones and the Peking man (or woman). Una lettura che si è trascinata per più di un mese con il risultato di tanta tanta noia e insofferenza. In parte sono dovute a me e alla mia stanchezza atavica, me ne rendo conto.. Ma tanto ha anche fatto Amy Tan!
Non sono riuscita per niente ad entrare nella storia, a capire/comprendere/apprezzare e compatire i personaggi, che non mi sono riusciti a comunicarmi proprio niente. La protagonista poi.. Non so, non mi è piaciuta per niente, così fredda!!

I enjoyed this far more than I thought I would one third of the way through. Excellent prose, wonderful characters, and a glimpse into the relationships between mothers and daughters that will make you weep.
