This was easily one of the best written and most depressing books that I have ever read. The author tells the stories of tenants and landlords in Milwaukee, Wisconsin over the course of several years and sprinkling in facts and studies relevant to the situations. The last section about next steps and how he wrote this book were fascinating. Desmond shows the impact of evictions on poor families in Milwaukie WI. Once a family looses housing stability things can spiral out of control very quickly. He includes the perspective of two landlords who own some of the rentals that Desmond’s subjects cycle through. This book is eye opening especially as my own city faces a homeless crisis.
I recommend this book to all Americans.
