Raw. Hard Truths. Unapologetic.

Those are the words that come to mind as I have just finished up Milk and Honey. This was a free verse poetic story that I have been putting off for awhile now. It was a book I needed to read in my own time and by my own will - as it was recommended to me multiple times.

Some of these poems were beautiful and poignant, but the majority feel unfinished. The opening section on trauma (mostly sexual) felt detached from the other three sections which surrounded falling in love, breaking up, and growing from that growth. Most felt like inspirational quotes at best (accept yourself / as you were designed, fall/ in love/with your solitude), or tweets that should have been diary entries (the thing about writing is/i can't tell if it's healing/or destroying me). These poems are all phenomenal. I took SO many pictures of them and sent them to people. I think every woman can relate to this book. I love that it's split into four different phases, but damn, some of those poems hit too close to home. ...more
